Special Events

• Following tradition, there will be a Bartholomew Award Lecture, this year given by Jason E. Podrabsky (Portland State University) and entitled “From mud puddles to microarrays: Searching for the molecular basis of eurythermy and diapause in the annual killifish Austrofundulus limnaeus“. Yoshi Nagahama will give the traditional Howard Bern Lecture; his talk is entitled “The Plasticity of Fish Gender: An Evolutionary Basis for Sex Determination and Differentiation in Vertebrates“.
• NSF will have program officers present to meet with members and discuss funding opportunities. NSF program officers will again be interested in hearing what members think should be supported by NSF.

Student “First Timer” Orientation
If you are registering as a student and this is your first time at a SICB meeting, you are strongly encouraged to join the Student/ Postdoctoral Affairs Committee to learn about the benefits of the Annual Meeting, meet your fellow students, and receive tips on presentations at the meeting. Note that if you have been selected as a student worker, you are required to attend.

Opening Plenary Session
The Plenary lecture will be given by John A. McLachlan, Ph.D., Weatherhead Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies; Professor of Pharmacology; Director, Center for Bioenvironmental Research; Tulane and Xavier Universities; Acting Director, National Center for the Mississippi River.

Welcome to New Orleans Reception
The Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology welcomes you to New Orleans with a reception on Monday, January 5. A cash bar will be available and snacks will be provided.

Companion Orientation/Continental Breakfast
All registered guests are welcome to join an informal gathering on Tuesday, January 6, from 9:00-10:00 am. A knowledgeable local person will be on hand to let you know about some of the many fascinating facts and sightseeing opportunities that New Orleans is famous for.

SICB Society-Wide Evening Social plus Post Social Party in Honor of Students and Postdocs
Join your fellow SICB members for a Society-Wide Social on Thursday, January 8, from 7:30-9:30 pm. Coffee, desserts and fruit will be served and a cash bar will be available. Following the Social, there will be a party with a zydeco band, featuring food, a cash bar and GREAT music. The party will be from 9:30 pm – ??

American Microscopical Society
AMS members are invited to meet for a special luncheon which will follow their Past Presidential Address.

ADInstruments Workshop “New Directions in Your Physiology Classroom”
Wednesday, January 7, 6:30-8 pm Join ADInstruments for a wine and cheese social as we discuss experiments in animal physiology performed using the latest in computer acquisition systems.

Too often, students fail to grasp concepts in their biology lab courses because they struggle with their equipment instead of learning scientific principles. In this workshop, learn how three classic physiology experiments can be performed using PowerLab: Frog Sciatic Nerve, Frog Heart, and Frog Gastrocnemius. Learn the basics of recording with Chart, how to save and export Chart data files, and advanced analysis techniques. In addition, ADInstruments’ Education Project Manager will be available to address your technical questions and gather your input regarding ADInstruments’ educational materials.

CBP Divisional Social Honoring George A. Barthlomew

The Social for the Division of Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology will be on 6 January from 7:30 pm until 8:30. This year’s event will be special, as it will be honoring George A. Bartholomew.
