The Year 2002 Annual Meeting for the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) is an educational and research forum for scientists and students studying the biological sciences. The meeting will include many symposia, workshops and special programs in addition to hundreds of contributed papers in divisional and topical sessions. Watch this web site for Schedule of Events updates and the posting of abstracts after October 31, 2001.

Opening Session
Join us for the Opening Session featuring Robert J. Full, Professor of Integrative Biology, University of California, Berkeley, on Wednesday, January 2, from 8-9 pm. He will speak on “Bipedal bugs, galloping ghosts, and gripping geckos: Bioinspired computer animation, robotics, and adhesives.” As Director of the Poly-P.E.D.A.L Laboratory, Professor Full has provided biological inspiration for the design of multilegged robots, artificial muscles, and dry adhesives. His talk promises to be a dynamite presentation of how integrative biology can be enlightening and revolutionary in the way we view and utilize nature’s secrets. See: http://polypedal.berkeley.edu.

Special Symposia
In addition to the wide variety of divisional symposia, there will be two Society-wide symposia: “The promise of integrative biology,” which will bring five outstanding biologists to the meeting to share their successes in following an integrative approach, and “Comparative Immunology,” which will explore a field that belongs in SICB.

Symposia
Find a list of symposia webpages at our .

  • The promise of integrative biology.
  • Symposium on comparative immunology.
  • Integrative and evolutionary roles of extracellular hormone-binding proteins.
  • Dynamics and energetics of animal swimming and flying.
  • Ecological developmental biology.
  • The Cambrian explosion: Putting the pieces together.
  • New perspectives on the origin of metazoan complex-ity.
  • Physiological ecology of rocky intertidal organisms: From molecules to ecosystems.
  • Integrative approaches to biogeography: Patterns and processes on land and in the sea.
  • Retirement mini-symposium in honor of Russel L. Zimmer.
  • Neural mechanisms of orientation and navigation.
  • Recent developments in neurobiology.
  • Biomechanics of adhesion.
  • Tendon – bridging the gap.

Town Meeting on Evolution
Following the overwhelming success of the Town Meeting on Evolution at the Chicago meeting, SICB will hold a second Town Meeting at the Annual Meeting in Anaheim, on January 4, 2002. The program will feature two speakers who will give short presentations, followed by general discussion and debate among the attendees. Our first speaker will be Dr. Massimo Pigliucci of the University of Tennessee and author of the e-column “Rationally Speaking.” Dr. Pigliucci will discuss Intelligent Design Theory, one of the current arguments being advanced by creationists. Our second speaker will be Dr. Ron Edwards of DePaul University, who will present “Lies the Biologists Told Me,” an interactive demonstration of how introductory biology courses often alienate students to evolutionary thought.

Poster Presentations
There will be three all-day Poster Presentations, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (January 3-5) in the Exhibit Hall. Viewing will be from 10 am to 7 pm, followed by Question and Answer Sessions from 7 to 9:30 pm, when a cash bar will be available.
