Special Events
In addition to the Bartholomew Award/Lecture and the Bern Lecture, there will be a special lecture by Simon Conway Morris on “The Cambrian explosion: What’s the problem?” Thursday, 6:30-7:30 pm.
The Public Affairs Committee is sponsoring three events:
January 3, 8-10 pm: Media Workshop — “Evolution for Dummies”, featuring science writer Carl Zimmer.
January 4, 9-12 am: Interactive workshop on web-based natural history databases, including AmphibiaWeb and Animal Diversity Web (contact: Cynthia Parr, csparr@umich.edu).
January 4, noon to 1 pm: Evolution Town Meeting, featuring Massimo Pigliucci discussing “Intelligent Design” (see fp.bio.utk.edu/skeptic) and Ron Edwards on “Lies the Biologists Told Me”.
NSF will again have program officers present to meet with members and discuss funding opportunities. This year NSF program officers will be especially interested in hearing what members think should be supported by NSF; come give them an earfull!
Student “First Timer” Orientation
If you are registering as a student and this is your first SICB meeting, you are encouraged to join the Student/Postdoctoral Affairs Committee on Wednesday, January 2 from 5:30-6:15 pm, to learn about the benefits of the Annual Meeting, meet your fellow students, and receive tips on presentations at the meeting.
Welcome to Anaheim Reception
The Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology welcomes you to Anaheim with a reception on Wednesday, January 2, from 9:00-11:00pm. A cash bar will be available and snacks will be provided.
Companion Orientation Program
All registered guests are welcome to join an informal gathering on Thursday, January 3, from 9:00-10:00 am. A member of the Anaheim Convention and Visitors Bureau will be on hand to let you know about some of the many fascinating facts and sightseeing opportunities that Anaheim is famous for.
Student/Postdoctoral Luncheon
The SICB Student/Postdoctoral Affairs Committee offers students an excellent opportunity to meet with fellow student members in an informal setting including a complimentary lunch on Thursday, January 3, from 11:30 am-12:50 pm.
SICB Society-Wide Dessert Social in Honor of Students and Postdocs
Join your fellow SICB members for a Society-Wide Social on Saturday, January 5, from 9:00-11:00 pm. Coffee and desserts will be served and a cash bar will be available.
American Microscopical Society Past Presidential Address and Luncheon
The Past Presidential Address will be presented on Saturday, Jan. 5, 10:30 am-11:30 am, by Don Munson entitled “Potentially Pathogenic Free – Living Amoebae: A Review and Update”. AMS members are invited to meet for a special luncheon which will follow their Past Presidential Address from 11:40 am-12:50 pm.
AMS Photomicrography Contest
Do you have a favorite photomicrograph you’d like others to see? It could be the winner!
Date: January 3-5, 2002
Location: Annual Meeting of the American Microscopical Society with the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, Anaheim Marriot, Anaheim, California
Prize: The winning entry will be published in Invertebrate Biology and will also be featured in the American Microscopical Society website. Entries awarded “Honorable Mention” will also be displayed on the American Microscopical Society website.
Contest Rules:
- Photomicrographs taken using transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and light microscopy are eligible. All meeting participants may submit up to 3 entries; AMS membership is welcomed but not required.
- Submissions must be prints (no transparencies or digital files, please), with maximum dimensions of 8″ X 10″, unlabeled and unsigned, and mounted on poster board or foam core mounting board. Below the print, attach no more than one line of information briefly identifying the subject (e.g., “Mouthparts of a mite”) and stating the microscopical technique (e.g., “SEM”).
- Entries will be accepted on Thursday morning only, January 3, 2002 at the American Microscopical Society Booth in the Exhibition Center, where they will be displayed as a group. The deadline for submitting entries is before the exhibits close for lunch.
- Voting begins on Thursday afternoon, January 3, 2002 and ends before exhibits close for lunch on Saturday, January 5, 2002. All visitors to the American Microscopical Society Booth are allowed one ballot.
- The winning entry and entries awarded “Honorable Mention” will be determined by a tally of the ballots and will be announced at the American Microscopical Society Luncheon on Saturday, January 5, 2002.
- All entries must be reclaimed on Saturday afternoon, January 5, 2002, before the exhibit hall closes.
- The author retains all rights to the entry. If the image has been published previously, the author should obtain appropriate permission from the holder of the copyright.
