At the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Institute for Biology, Department of Marine Biology, subject to allocation of funds, we are filling the following position at the 1st December 2021 on a temporary basis for the duration of the project of 3 years:

Research Assistant (m/f/d)
EG 13 TV-L, part-time employment, 26 hours/week, limited, project position

The project is embedded in the interdisciplinary project CREATE (Concepts for reducing effects of anthropogenic pressures and uses on marine ecosystems and biodiversity) within the Mission of the German Alliance for Marine Research (DAM): “Protection and Use of Marine Areas” and funded by the German Ministry for Science and Education. CREATE is aimed at producing knowledge-based solutions in order to mitigate effects of climate driven stressors in the coastal zone.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The European Oyster was once widespread forming extensive reefs across the Wadden Sea including the German Bight. Currently it is one of the most threatened coastal marine species in the North European coast. Intensive efforts are carried out to restore the populations of European oysters. The objective of this project work is to study the capacity of re-established populations of European oysters to recolonise its historical habitats in the German Bight. The project will determine the physiological tolerance of oyster larvae and adults to temperature and other stressors and assess the performance of adults and larvae from different genetic stocks under the restoration-relevant in the lab and the filed. The work will involve laboratory experiments based on field-collected and hatchery-reared oysters from different populations. The data will inform the restoration efforts and sustainability assessments of European oysters in the German Bight. Most of the experimental work will be conducted at the Marine Station of Helgoland, Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research located on Helgoland Island.

Requirements

• completed university degree (state examination, diploma, master’s degree or comparable degree) in the field of biological sciences or related with preferably good results
• interest in ecophysiology, life history and population dynamics of marine invertebrates
  willingness to live on Helgoland where most of the laboratory work will be carried out
  minimum physical aptitude for laboratory and field work on/in water
• excellent oral and written communication skills including fluent knowledge of the English language
• willingness to work with commitment on a project of one’s own scientific qualification
  excellent time management and ability to work independently and in a team for interdisciplinary work groups
