The University of Maine seeks outstanding applicants for a transdisciplinary Conservation Science and Practice, NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) program that will prepare the next generation of conservation leaders. These scholars integrate biophysical and social sciences in collaborative, solutions-driven research, professional development, and coursework on resilient conservation of natural resources. Students earn graduate degrees in fields such as Communication, Forest Resources, Wildlife Ecology, or Ecology and Environmental Sciences while achieving a graduate specialization in Conservation Science.
Transdisciplinary research and active learning experiences central to the program address governance frameworks, biodiversity conservation, sustainable rural livelihoods and resource-dependent economies, stewardship values, and spatial sciences. Our goal is to build a well-trained, experienced workforce to advance conservation solutions that will ultimately lead to enhanced resilience of socio–ecological systems in Maine and beyond.
This innovative program includes:
- Participation in a new graduate specialization in Conservation Science.
- Courses that provide theoretical and research foundations in socio–ecological resilience and science communication.
- Internships with our federal, tribal, state, or NGO partners.
- Transdisciplinary research projects.
- Mentoring by faculty from multiple academic departments.
