Posted on September 16, 2023
Expires: December 16, 2023

The Department of Evolution, Ecology and Behavior and the School of Integrative Biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invite applications from biologists with a record of research in mammalian ecology to join a transdisciplinary “cluster” of new professors focused on Climate Impacts, Risk, and Inequality. This cluster includes faculty hires in seven departments: Plant Biology, Entomology, Atmospheric Sciences, Earth Science & Environmental Change, Geography & Geographic Information Science, Journalism, and Evolution, Ecology & Behavior. The cluster is broadly aimed at boosting the University’s ability to address the grand challenges facing society in Illinois and around the world. Research in the following general areas is encouraged: ameliorating the impacts of climate change on food security, human health, and ecosystem integrity; enhancing understanding of anthropogenic mediated changes to species, populations, and people; developing alternative technologies for clean energy and agricultural sustainability; and addressing social injustice arising from environmental inequities. For more information, please see: publish.illinois.edu/2023climatecluster

The position is a full-time, 9-month, tenured faculty position at the associate or full professor level, with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2024.

We are looking for individuals whose work will engage in research and teaching in mammalian ecology in areas including population or community ecology, biogeography, or conservation. We are also interested in research on anthropogenic influences on mammalian populations and mammals as reservoirs of human disease. The successful candidate will be expected to have an externally funded research program and collaborate with other faculty to develop research initiatives. This position provides an opportunity to be part of dynamic and well-established communities of integrative biologists with interests spanning a wide range of taxa in the School of Integrative Biology as well as many interdisciplinary programs across the campus, including the Illinois Natural History Survey, which houses a large vertebrate collection. Responsibilities also include teaching and participation in both undergraduate and graduate training.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in ecology, evolution, biology, zoology, genetics/genomics, conservation biology, or a related discipline. Candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to working with students or faculty from groups historically marginalized or underrepresented in the field through teaching, mentoring, or administration are especially encouraged to apply. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
