The Department of Biology at The University of Akron invites applications for an academic year (9-month) tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree at the time of hire with the ability to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicants will use any combination of experimental, theoretical and computational approaches to carry out research that advances our understanding of how biological processes (at any scale) are changing under the impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss, human population growth or similar global issues. Applicants’ research should investigate these changing biological processes and their potential impacts on human society through research in areas such as agriculture, conservation, public health, sustainability, urban ecology, or zoonotic diseases. Startup funding is available and opportunities exist to leverage local resources such as the UA field station, the Biomimicry Research and Innovation Center, and/or health care infrastructure (e.g., the Cleveland Clinic and Akron Children’s Hospital) to support development of research that has meaningful impact on diverse communities. The successful applicant will develop courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level that challenge our students’ perspectives and equip them to deal with a rapidly changing world. The ideal applicant will have post-doctoral research experience and demonstrated potential to develop an active research program that contributes to the departmental emphasis on interdisciplinary science and the UA Integrated Bioscience PhD Program, and which enhances the experience of our biology and/or biomedical science undergraduate students.
This search is part of an effort to assemble a cohort of teacher-scholars who will offer a strong contribution to the diversity and excellence of UA through teaching, scholarship, service and collaboration. Specifically, as an urban-research university, we are particularly interested in scholars whose work touches on the pressing needs of cities and urban communities. Therefore, we are especially interested in applicants whose research demonstrates potential for inclusion of underserved demographics or communities by incorporating impacts of global biological change on needs and problems that include, but are not limited to: families, health disparities, criminal justice/police reform, race/ethnicity broadly, environmental justice, social justice, urban planning, economic justice, or LGBTQ+ issues.
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran. For complete information on this position, please visit the University of Akron’s Career page.
Applicants should submit a cover letter, c.v., and contact information for three references. The application should include statements of research and teaching. As an urban research university in a diverse locale, the University of Akron is committed to advancing diversity goals within the community at large. As such, we ask that candidates also submit a maximum one-page ‘Contributions to Diversity’ statement. In this statement we ask that you speak to your values with respect to diversity, equity, and inclusion, your plans related to diversity and inclusion in your teaching and research, and your experience working with underrepresented populations and/or on issues that disproportionately affect diverse populations in your profession and/or community life. Applications should be submitted to https://www.uakron.edu/hr/job-openings/openings.dot (ID# 13984) and are due by January 16th, 2023.
