Description

The Department of Biology at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin in August 2024. We seek candidates committed to inclusive excellence in teaching and research, with demonstrated ability to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds. A successful candidate will contribute to teaching in one of two Introductory Biology courses (either in cell/molecular biology and biochemistry or in functional organismal biology). We are particularly interested in candidates who can also teach an upper-division course (with lab) in either biochemistry or comparative physiology. The candidate will be expected to establish a productive research program in their area of interest that is well-suited to undergraduate participation. The research area is open, but please note that facilities for research on vertebrate systems are extremely limited.

This position carries a 3-2 teaching load with a full-salary one-semester research leave prior to tenure review, and generous sabbatical and fellowship leaves for tenured faculty. All full-time appointments offer competitive salaries and include full benefits, including travel support and reimbursement for relocation. Faculty at the College cultivate a richly diverse academic community, pursue innovative teaching, and create high-impact scholarship. To learn more about faculty life at the College & the Worcester area, candidates are encouraged to visit our Prospective Faculty page.

Qualifications

Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to inclusive excellence in all facets of working with undergraduates. A successful candidate will show a commitment to effective teaching in the context of a liberal arts college, have published research, and show promise in establishing an independent research program involving undergraduate students. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field of biology or biochemistry at the time of appointment.

Application Instructions

Candidates should submit a cover letter, current curriculum vitae, statement on teaching, statement on research, undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and three confidential letters of recommendation. These materials should collectively address the candidate’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and inclusive excellence. The teaching statement should address how your training and experiences have prepared you to teach in one of our introductory courses (BIOL 161 or 162) and in one of the upper-division areas mentioned above. The research statement should contextualize the research for a broad Biology department, provide future plans and describe strategies for undergraduate involvement.

As a Jesuit, undergraduate liberal arts college, the College values dialogue among people from diverse perspectives as integral to the mission and essential to the excellence of our academic program. In your cover letter and statements on teaching and research, please highlight how your teaching, scholarship, mentorship, and/or service might support the College’s mission and its commitment to diversity and inclusion.
