Position description
Assistant Professor in Marine Animal Physiology
The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California, San Diego invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in Marine Animal Physiology. We seek candidates who take innovative approaches to address fundamental physiological questions regarding invertebrate or vertebrate marine animals. Example areas of research include (but are not limited to) neurophysiology, diving physiology, cardiac and respiratory physiology, osmotic and acid-base regulation, energy metabolism, biomineralization, biomechanics, symbiosis, immunology, and reproduction. A successful candidate would integrate physiology at the organismal level with molecular, biochemical and cellular biology, and/or environmental physiology. A comparative and evolutionary approach, as well as links to climate change biology, aquaculture, ecotoxicology or conservation are encouraged. We seek applicants with the expertise and desire to teach lecture- and laboratory-based physiology courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with multidisciplinary colleagues at SIO, with other departments within the large and dynamic UC San Diego campus, and with the vibrant scientific and industry community of Southern California. Candidates will be evaluated on their potential to establish a vigorous research program, provide intellectual leadership in their field, acquire extramural funds, train and mentor students, teach in the marine biology undergraduate major, and contribute to building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.
We understand that the COVID-19 pandemic may have had a substantial impact on academic productivity. In our academic hiring processes, we will be keeping this in mind as we consider achievement relative to opportunity. We encourage candidates to reflect on constraints on opportunity in your field that were caused by the events of the pandemic and where applicable, to discuss your achievements in this light.
SIO is a world-renowned center of solid Earth, planetary, oceanographic, biological, and atmospheric research with over 200 principal investigators leading research programs. SIO is part of the University of California, San Diego, which is one of the top research universities in the world. We are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student community.
