The successful applicant will be part of a research team investigating form and function in fossil and extant cetaceans. They will direct and execute their own research program in the context of a broader team, including specimen preparation, data collection, analysis, and publication. Techniques may revolve around morphology, hard- and soft-tissue histology, imaging, and computer analysis of quantitative data. They will contribute skills and effort to ongoing wide-ranging research projects that investigate cetacean morphology and function from evolutionary and developmental perspectives. Ongoing projects study evolution of brain size and hearing in Cetacea, and chronological markers (such as growth lines) in bones and teeth of cetaceans. Available collections central to this research include anatomical, well-fixated samples of hard and soft tissues of extant beluga and bowhead whales, and, fossil samples of Eocene cetaceans from Pakistan and India.
