Position Summary:

The Wyneken Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at Florida Atlantic University seeks a driven Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the the cohort based at Florida Atlantic University Marine Laboratory at Boca Raton. More information about the FAU Marine Laboratory can be found on our website here.

The Wyneken lab studies the relationships of environmental conditions to marine turtle development, structure, ecology and behavior. The lab uses field and experimental approaches to better understand current effects and predict future outcomes of environmental shifts on marine turtles. Other aspects of the lab focus on swimming and neonate dispersal. For information on recent studies see: http://biology.fau.edu/directory/wyneken/index.php. The postdoctoral associate will join four Ph.D. and Masters, and 5 undergraduate research students.

We are targeting candidates who bring diverse biological and quantitative skills to the lab along with and interests in student mentorship/supervision and effective communication of science. Opportunities to gain teaching experience in morphology can be made available. We particularly would like to maximize the value of long-term data from Florida sea turtle nests, hatchlings and their growth. The lab thrives on collegiality and the development of novel understanding of biology that aids current and future species recovery. We seek a team member who is enthusiastic about science, publication, refining their mentorship and supervisory skills, and contributing to our communication of science to the public.

 

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow position, funded through the Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation , is part of a larger initiative that emphasizes training the next generation of marine biologists in scientific research and effective communication of science to broad audiences. The Glenn W. and Cornelia T. Bailey Marine SEA Scholars (Science, Education, and Art) provides financial assistance to students who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to become ambassadors of community outreach focused on FAU Marine Laboratory studies and activities. The postdoctoral associate will assist in managing three postgraduate and 5 undergraduate research students participating in the program to conduct science communication for the FAU Marine Laboratory. Activities include content production and scheduling for social media, in person event attendance, newsletter and website management.

The appointment is for one year with possibility of two additional years of funding upon successful completion of year one (3 years total funding).

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Biology or Marine Biology from an accredited institution with emphases in development, morphology, ecology, marine science, biostatistics, or a related field and two years of experience required at time of application.

Skills to investigate organismal processes, explore and analyze large datasets, such as scientific coding/programming, or other quantitative methods.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and a proven capacity to publish original research in peer-reviewed journals required.
Must be self-motivated, and a strong work ethic.
Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative group environment required.
Strong interests in mentoring students and public outreach are essential.
Experience with turtles or other reptiles is strongly preferred but not essential.
Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
