The Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences in the Cook-Cole College of Arts & Sciences invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position (F0243) at the Assistant Professor level beginning in August 2025.

We seek a broadly trained biologist whose research interests will complement those of our current faculty. Teaching responsibilities include human anatomy and physiology (non-cadaver), introductory biology, and upper-level courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in the fields of, or related to, animal behavior, comparative anatomy, and/or developmental biology. The standard teaching load is 12 contact hours per semester. In addition to the primary responsibility of innovative undergraduate teaching, faculty are also expected to advise students in the major, develop a research program involving undergraduates, and participate in service at the department and university level.

The successful candidate will be provided with start-up funding and dedicated research space in a shared facility that includes space designed for small animal research. Additionally, you will have access to modern instrumentation, including digital PCR, flow cytometry, nanopore sequencer, high-speed cameras, and a range of microscopes (SEM, fluorescent, and digital confocal). The successful candidate can also utilize the Environmental Education Center at Lancer Park and the Baliles Center for Environmental Education at Hull Springs (a 660-acre waterfront property near the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay with new research and housing facilities for faculty and students). Longwood’s Office of Student Research provides funding to support student-faculty research and travel, and the Center for Faculty Enrichment provides professional development resources and training. The candidate also has the opportunity to contribute courses to Longwood’s Brock Experience, study abroad programs, and the Cormier Honors College.

Requirements:

  • Earned Ph.D. by time of appointment in August 2025.
  • Required commitment to excellence and innovation in undergraduate teaching, potential to develop a successful research program in an undergraduate setting, and dedication to quality advising of students and supervision of undergraduate research.
  • Candidates with demonstrated college teaching ability and commitment to service preferred.
  • A demonstrated ability and commitment to working with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and constituents in support of the university mission is preferred.
