AUGUSTANA UNIVERSITY, a rigorous, private liberal arts institution, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Biology, beginning August 2024. A Ph.D. with research expertise in a biologically related field is required; expertise in animal development, and/or the ability to teach a course in developmental biology from an animal perspective, are strongly desired. Postdoctoral research experience and teaching experience is preferred. The Biology Department is home to 13 full-time faculty, with a strong tradition of undergraduate research and excellent placement into postgraduate vocational programs and employment. A real emphasis on inclusive student mentorship and teaching pedagogy is a hallmark of the department’s commitment to undergraduate biology education. Interacting with students, faculty and leadership with different backgrounds and points of view and a deep appreciation of and respect for academic values and culture must be a top value of the candidate.
TEACHING EXPECTATIONS: Duties typically include teaching 2 lectures and 2 labs each semester, along with a January term course. This load will include an upper-level Developmental Biology lecture with a lab for Biology majors, team-taught introductory biology lectures and labs, and other courses in the successful candidate’s area of expertise. The ability to develop new courses and contribute to programs that augment department and university initiatives is encouraged. The ability to use and care for living animal models (including, but not limited to, fruit flies, zebrafish, or nematodes) for use in Biology courses and in research is strongly desired.
RESEARCH EXPECTATIONS: While teaching is a major component of the position,
productive research involving undergraduates is required. The university is situated in an area experiencing rapid growth in biomedical, biotech, agricultural, and environmental research, offering collaboration opportunities in various research areas. A research startup will be provided as well as access to extensive existing research equipment ($1,500,000 in new purchases in the
department over the last decade). A research program involving an animal model organism that can also be utilized in teaching labs is strongly preferred.
