The Biology Department at Skidmore College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Ecology beginning in Fall 2023. We seek broadly trained candidates with integrative expertise in areas such as disease ecology/ecoimmunology, behavioral ecology, or physiological/stress ecology. Skidmore College is a highly selective, nationally ranked liberal arts college in Saratoga Springs, New York, with a student population of 2,600 (8:1 student-faculty ratio), 26% of whom are domestic students of color, 11% are international students, and 15% are first generation college students. Skidmore is known for having faculty devoted to the instruction and mentoring of undergraduates. Enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring students in a collaborative, undergraduate environment is therefore essential, and the department is especially interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity and excellence of the academic community through their inclusive teaching. We encourage applications from individuals with identities historically underrepresented in the sciences and who have experience working with diverse student populations. A Ph.D. in biology with a specialization in ecology, or a related field, is required and prior teaching experience is desirable. Post-doctoral experience is beneficial, although not required.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach 18 contact hours per year where each lecture or lab section constitutes 3 contact hours. Teaching expectations include an introductory course in organismal biology, upper-level courses in their area of expertise, and an interdisciplinary first-year seminar. The hire will also be expected to establish a productive research program that engages undergraduates. The hire will have a dedicated research laboratory in the recently completed Center for Integrated Sciences, generous start-up funds, pre-tenure research leave, funds to travel to conferences/workshops, and a course release in the first year. The hire will also benefit from Skidmore’s North Woods (150-acre forested-landscape abutting campus) and proximity to the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of the Hudson River Valley and Adirondack regions.
