Assistant Professor if Microbiology

Microbiologist (Tenure-Track Assistant Professor, 9-month): The Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Science and Engineering Technology at Sam Houston State University seeks to hire an individual broadly trained in microbiology at the level of Assistant Professor.  The successful candidate will have earned a doctoral degree in microbiology or a closely related field.  Area of research is open to all areas of microbiology, including but not limited to bacteriology, virology, mycology, and parasitology.  The successful candidate is required to develop an externally funded research program involving undergraduates and masters-level graduate students in addition to collaborative research within the Department of Biological Sciences.  Postdoctoral research experience is preferred, but not required.  Teaching responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, courses in General Microbiology and Virology in addition to upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate’s specific area of expertise.

Sam Houston State is a comprehensive university located in East Texas, approximately 65 miles north of Houston, with an enrollment of 22,000 students.  Degrees conferred by the Department of Biological Sciences include a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, a Bachelor of Science in either Biology or Biomedical Sciences and Master of Science in Biology.  The department also offers an interdisciplinary master’s degree in Forensic Science with Criminal Justice and Chemistry.  There are currently 19 full-time faculty, 12 full-time staff members, including visiting assistant teaching professors, lecturers, laboratory and teaching support staff, and administrative support.  The department is well equipped to support research in the areas of cellular and molecular biology, including an animal housing facility that meets all current USDA standards as well as a microscopy suite that includes TEM, SEM, and confocal microscopes. The department is housed in a state-of-the-art Biology Laboratory Building that was completed in 2018.  The department also maintains a 250-acre field station for teaching and research purposes that is equipped with a fully functional laboratory classroom building.
