Primarily Undergraduate Institution Action Group

The PUI Action Group is composed of faculty from Primarily Undergraduate Institutions who seek to identify and address the needs of PUI faculty, build community among faculty from PUIs, support early career colleagues who are pursuing careers at PUIs, and highlight the research opportunities that exist at and in collaboration with PUIs. The SICB PUI Action Group has compiled a list of current PUI faculty that are willing to review application materials for PUI positions, serve as external reviewers for tenure and promotion, and/or collaborate on grants. You can find that list here. It includes information about faculty and their institutions, research interests, and contact information.

PUI Events at SICB 2026

  1. PUI booth at poster sessions
    • Date/Time: Sunday-Tuesday, January 4-6, 2026, 3:30-5:30pm
    • Location: Poster/exhibit hall
    • Representatives from the PUI Action Group will be at the booth during the poster sessions to offer a place to connect with fellow faculty at PUIs.
    • Current PUI faculty: sign up to sit at the booth for 1 hour (see Google Form above).
  2. PUI Day at the Student Postdoctoral Affairs Committee (SPDAC) booth
    • Date/Time: Monday, January 5, 2026, 3:30-5:30pm
    • Location: Poster/exhibit hall
    • Representatives from the PUI Action Group will be at the SPDAC booth this day to answer questions from graduate students and postdocs interested in a career at a PUI.
  3. PUI Breakfast Social 
    • Date/Time: Tuesday, January 6, 2026, 7:00-8:30am
    • Location: TBD (check the app/conference schedule)
    • Free small breakfast and coffee; first come first serve
    • Participants meet new people, talk with old friends, and build community.
  4. Mentoring village for PUI-curious grad students/post-docs 
    • Date/Time: Tuesday, January 6, 2026, 10:00-11:00am
    • Location: Meet in front of the PUI booth in the poster hall
    • Graduate students, post-docs, and other early professionals who are interested in PUI careers will meet with a group of current PUI faculty mentors. Mentoring villages serve to provide multiple mentors/perspectives about how to apply for PUI jobs, gain teaching experience, etc.
    • You can sign up as a mentor or mentee (see Google Form above).
  5. Mentoring village for untenured PUI faculty 
    • Date/Time: Tuesday, January 6, 2026, 2:30-3:30pm
    • Location: Meet in front of the PUI booth in the poster hall
    • Untenured PUI faculty will meet with a group of current tenured PUI faculty mentors during a coffee break at the conference. Mentoring villages serve to provide multiple mentors/perspectives about the tenure process, etc.
