Using rates of character evolution

To understand phenotypic diversity, we must use rates of phenotypic evolution, just as to understand and compare species diversity, we must use diversification rates [or some correction for time]. New techniques for estimating and comparing rates of phenotypic evolution allow the examination of many compelling hypotheses previously untestable. Methods for testing hypotheses regarding whether two or more groups have different rates of evolution, whether the change of state of a discrete trait is associated with a temporary increase in the rate of a continuous trait, and whether the state of a discrete trait correlates with the rate of a continuous trait will be described and illustrated with examples from groups ranging from ants to angiosperms. Software implementing these techniques will also be demonstrated.
