P2.3 Monday, Jan. 5 Evolution of Hyoid Morphology and Call Structure in North American Hylids FEARS, B.C.*; MAGLIA, A.M.; Missouri University of Science and Technology; Missouri University of Science and Technology bcf9b7@mst.edu
Although the ecological implications and structure of frog calls have been the subject of much study, little is known about the association between hyoid and cricoid cartilage morphology and call structure. In this study, we conduct linear and geometric morphometric analyses of the hyoid and cricoid structures of several representative North American hylid frogs and compare them to analyses of call structure (in the context of a phylogeny of the group). We comment on key innovations in morphology and call structure and discuss implications for evolution and speciation in the group.
