Evolution and Development of Complex Biomechanical Systems 300 Million Years of Fish Jaws and Teeth

HULSEY, CD*; FRASER, GJ; STREELMAN, JT; Georgia Tech; Georgia Tech; Georgia Tech: Evolution and Development of Complex Biomechanical Systems: 300 Million Years of Fish Jaws and Teeth

We discuss the comparative developmental genetics of oral and pharyngeal jaws of teleost fishes. The insights possible from comparative studies are discussed in the context of zebrafish and new models for studies of jaw evolution and development. We focus on the major biomechanical systems in the teleost head and the range and interplay of developmental, genetic, and functional influences that shape the modular evolution of trophic elements.
