Lysmata wurdemanni, is a small subtropical caridean shrimp that has recently been redescribed and now is restricted to the northwestern Atlantic. Within this distribution, L. wurdemanni populations range from at least as far southwest as the Texas-Mexican border and as far north as Long Island, New York. In order to assess the cohesiveness of the species, we measured the population genetic structure and mating compatibility of different populations within the species range. Multigene sequence data from Texas, Florida, South Carolina and New York revealed a significant genetic population structure. Interbreeding experiments within and between populations demonstrated a significant difference in mating compatibility between populations and was concordant with the genetic data. Our results question the validity of Lysmata wurdemanni as an interbreeding and genetic homogeneous species.
