The Department of Biology at Rhodes College seeks qualified applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in organismal biology (including but not limited to plant biology, freshwater biology or invertebrate biology) to begin in August 2024. Candidates must have a Ph.D. by August 2024, and post-doctoral or professional experience is preferred.  Applicants should have a commitment to teaching undergraduates while maintaining an active research program that engages undergraduate students. Start-up funds will be provided to support the expected development of a productive research program. Teaching responsibilities will include five lectures/labs per year (labs count as a full teaching involvement). Normal teaching responsibilities will include an upper-level biology course with lab within the candidate’s area of specialty, and introductory biology (topics include biodiversity, evolution, plant and animal physiology, ecology, and conservation). Other teaching opportunities include an additional upper-level course in the candidate’s area of specialty and senior seminar.

The Department of Biology maintains an active partnership with the Memphis Zoo and is an affiliate of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory. Nearby field sites include Overton Park, Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park, Shelby Farms, and the Wolf River wetlands. The successful applicant may participate in the interdisciplinary Environmental Studies and Sciences program, and we encourage applications from individuals whose interests go beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries.

Review of completed applications will begin October 1, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled. Candidates from backgrounds typically underrepresented in higher education are strongly encouraged to apply. Letters of recommendation will only be solicited for short-listed applicants, at which time you will be prompted for the names and contact information for three (3) references. Background checks are required before candidates can be brought to campus for interviews.
