Basic Function: The position is for a bachelors-level research technician to work on the NSF EEID funded project “Habitat and coinfection as drivers of heterogeneity in cross-scale wildlife infectious disease processes”. The research technician will be responsible for assisting with laboratory and field research, as well as supervising undergraduate researchers and general project management. The technician will receive cross-disciplinary training in experimental design, disease ecology, zoonotic diseases, field research methods, laboratory diagnostics, working in BSL3 laboratory, and data analysis. This is a 1-year position. This position will start on July 5, 2023.

Essential Functions: Reporting to Assistant Professor of Biology Sarah Budischak, the research technician works independently/collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

Fieldwork on uneven terrain

Handling and sampling wild animals

Biological laboratory work (e.g. immunological assays, quantitative PCR)

Project management (e.g. managing data, ordering supplies, coordinating schedules)

International travel and spending extended time (multiple months) abroad

Mentoring undergraduate researchers

Work as a team member and independently

Written and oral communication of scientific findings

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of 1 year experience with any combination of the following: working with animals in the lab or field, biological laboratory research, conducting publication-quality independent research, and/or mentoring undergraduate researchers.

Licenses: A valid drivers license is required

Physical Requirements:  The ability to perform field research working on uneven ground while carrying equipment (up to 30 lbs) is required.

Required knowledge, skills, abilities:

Basic biological laboratory procedures (e.g. lab safety, pipetting)

Ability to work as a team and/or individual to conduct scientific research and share scientific findings though oral or written modes

A willingness to handle and sample wild animals

A willingness to work with animals in a BSL3 lab

Use strong organizational skills and time management to complete work accurately and with a keen attention to detail.

Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with strong interpersonal skills

Operate computers proficiently with Microsoft Office software and a basic knowledge of R.

Prioritize and perform multiple tasks, meet deadlines, respond to others in a timely manner, work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College with a high standard of integrity and ethics, in support of the project’s goals.

Hours: This is a full time position (40 hr/wk). Hours will vary greatly during different phases of the project. During fieldwork, extended hours (early morning/late evening, weekends) are required; during laboratory/analysis periods, the job will entail more typical weekday 8-5 hours. Travel is required. This is a 12 month position.
