The School of Marine and Environmental Programs is located on UNE’s Biddeford waterfront campus, with easy access to a variety of coastal ecosystems including rocky coastlines, sandy beaches, mudflats and salt marshes. Our school is inter-disciplinary, offering a multitude of majors ranging from Marine Science to Environmental Studies to Marine Entrepreneurship. Open water can be accessed for research and teaching with our fleet of small research vessels. The marine programs are housed in the Arthur P. Girard Marine Science Center which has a 600,000-gallon capacity flow-through seawater system. The school is listed in Biology Explorer’s list of top ten marine biology colleges, College Choice’s list of the top fifteen bachelor’s programs in marine biology, and College Magazine’s list of the best 10 colleges for marine biology. UNE’s research infrastructure includes aquatic research labs with tank rooms for recirculating aquaculture, live foods and phytoplankton culture, aquaponics, and ornamental fish and coral husbandry as well as a kelp farm lease site. Additional facilities found on campus include a rodent vivarium and behavior analysis core, a new zebrafish facility, and histology and imaging core laboratories. Opportunities exist to collaborate with regional aquaculture farms, marine research facilities (Gulf of Maine Research Institute and Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences to name two), and agencies within the state of Maine as well as with faculty in CAS as well as in other colleges at UNE, including several university-level Centers of Excellence.

UNE is a private, non-profit, comprehensive R2 university, with campuses in Portland and Biddeford, Maine and Tangier, Morocco. The College of Arts and Sciences is located on UNE’s waterfront Biddeford campus, with nearby city-based amenities in Portland (a 30-minute drive) and Boston (a 2-hour drive). UNE’s location in southern Maine also affords easy access to forests, mountains, freshwater lakes, rocky coastlines, and sandy beaches. CAS, one of UNE’s five colleges, has a primary focus on undergraduate education.
