City University of Hong Kong: Post-doc positions in anatomy, functional morphology & biological materials of shark and ray tissues (start 2022/3)

Labgroup info: Nature produces impressive biological materials from comparatively few chemical ingedients; the diverse form-function relationships of biological tissues —and their potential for informing manmade applications— can only be understood by investigating diverse natural examples. Our group mixes zoology, engineering/biomateri- als, marine science and design approaches (e.g. using microCT, microscopy, material char- acterization, 3D printing) to learn from biology and biological materials. We focus mostly on vertebrate animal tissues, and particularly in fishes, using muscle, skeleton and skin as models for understanding development, evolution and high-perfoming materials.

Available positions: (please contact for more specific project info)

1. UGC General Research Fund-funded position for 2 years
2. Ocean Park Conservation Fund-funded position for 1 year with possibility for renewal
We’re hiring for 2-3 separate projects, requiring a mix of anatomy, mechanics, and materials (and, in one case, optics) approaches. Candidates ideally have anatomy and/or materials science training with an interest in both and with strong organizational, collaborative, experimental and visual skills.
We seek enthusiastic, kind, open, and curious candidates, who enjoy interdisciplinary interactions and can be reliable, approachable and supportive members of a diverse research group. Proficiency in one or more of the following is a plus: histology, bioimaging, 3D visualization/rendering, a programming language for data analysis (e.g. R/Python), optical material characterization. Proficiency in English required.
