Applications are sought for the role of Features & Reviews Editor on Journal of Experimental Biology.
Joining an experienced and successful team, this newly created role is an exciting opportunity for a talented scientific editor to make a significant contribution to the leading journal in comparative animal physiology and biomechanics as it heads towards its 100th anniversary in 2023.
Journal of Experimental Biology publishes papers on the form and function of animals at all levels of biological organisation – from the molecular and subcellular to the integrated whole animal – in an evolutionary and environmental context. In addition to core primary research papers, the journal has a well-regarded and dynamic front section of review and news content, which will be expanding as part of the centenary celebrations.
Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant field. Post-doctoral and/or previous editorial experience is highly desirable, although we will provide on-the-job training. The successful candidate will be a team player with a broad interest in science, the scientific community and publishing. Excellent interpersonal and writing skills, enthusiasm and commitment are also essential requirements for the position.
Core responsibilities include:
- Commissioning, handling peer review and developmental editing of review-type content
- Conducting interviews, writing article highlights, social media posts, press releases and other material (e.g. digital output) for the journal
- Contributing to planning of additional journal content and community initiatives for the 2023 centenary
- Representation of the journal at international conferences and within the wider scientific community
- Creative involvement in the journal’s development and marketing activities.
The Features & Reviews Editor will work alongside an experienced in-house team, including the Managing Editor, Reviews Editor and News & Views Editor, as well as with an international team of academic editors.
This position provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience on a highly successful life sciences journal and offers an attractive salary and benefits. The position is full-time (although part-time working may be considered) and will be based in The Company of Biologists’ offices on the outskirts of Cambridge, UK. Owing to the pandemic, an initial period of remote working may be necessary.
