One of the most prevalent and important modes of morphological evolution in animals involves their color patterns. Since many ecological interactions are affected by color patterns (e.g. predation, mating behavior), the evolution of these patterns are attractive models for approaching the genetic mechanisms underlying character evolution under selection. Our goal is to elucidate the molecular and developmental basis of intraspecific and interspecific differences in pigmentation.
