SICB Statement on the Ethical Treatment of Organisms

The Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) values the lives and welfare of all living organisms that make our science possible. As integrative biologists, we recognize our responsibility to treat all multi-cellular organisms with care, respect, and compassion, and hold ourselves to the highest ethical standards.

The Society upholds the principles of the “3Rs” (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) in society activities.

The Society promotes the ethical conduct of fieldwork with sensitivity to natural populations and ecosystems, ensuring compliance with wildlife and conservation regulations.

SICB offers training and mentorship so that current and future scientists understand both the scientific and ethical dimensions of organismal research.

SICB promotes honesty, transparency, and accountability in reporting research practices and outcomes of our membership.

Through these commitments, SICB advances discovery while honoring our ethical responsibility to all living organisms and the natural world.
