University of Virginia, Postdoc Position: Evolutionary biomechanics of fins and limbs across water-land transitions

Posted on May 12, 2026
Join the Fins and Limbs Lab! Dr. Sandy Kawano is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on the evolutionary biomechanics of fish fins and salamander limbs through the Department of Biology at the University of Virginia.
The project integrates 3D technology, materials science engineering, paleontology, and functional morphology to pioneer work on the functional and phenotypic diversity of bones in non-model animals through theoretical and empirical approaches. The postdoctoral research associate would join a broadly trained, supportive, and collaborative group at UVA, which includes the Department of Biology; Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior group; Center for Applied Biomechanics; Mountain Lake Biological Station, and much more!
Review of applications will begin on June 1, 2026, and continue until the position is filled. The tentative start date for the position is August 1, 2026, but negotiable.
