San Francisco State University: Funded Master’s Research Opportunity — Evolution, Development, and Deep Homology of Fins and Limbs

Posted on October 21, 2026

San Francisco State University | Fall 2027
Support: $19,000/year + tuition waiver
Degree: M.S. in Biology (2–3 years)
Priority Application Deadline: January 15, 2027

Interested in how evolution generates new forms? Curious about the genes and developmental processes underlying the extraordinary diversity of fishes?

The laboratory of Dr. Karen Crow at San Francisco State University is recruiting a motivated student for a funded Master’s degree in Biology focused on evolutionary developmental biology and the evolution of novelty.

Our research investigates the deep homology of fins and limbs, exploring how conserved developmental and gene-regulatory programs generate novel morphological traits. We study diverse fishes, including leopard sharks, bat rays, catfish, spotted ratfish, surfperches, and sculpin.

The student will choose from several grant-funded research projects and join a supportive, collaborative team that includes the PI, a postdoctoral researcher, and other graduate and undergraduate students. Depending on the project, research may involve comparative morphology, transcriptomics (RNA-seq), gene-expression analysis (HCR), fluorescence microscopy, and bioinformatics.

Students will receive hands-on training, close mentorship, and opportunities to present and publish research. Fieldwork will take place in California, with potential opportunities in Moorea (French Polynesia) or Australia.

Qualifications: Applicants should have a background or strong interest in evolutionary biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, genetics, genomics, marine biology, ichthyology, or related fields. Previous research experience is welcome but not required. We particularly value intellectual curiosity, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn.

How to Apply: Email a CV or résumé, brief cover letter describing research interests, and contact information for three references to crow@sfsu.edu by January 15, 2027, for priority consideration.

Selected candidates must also apply to the SFSU M.S. in Biology program through Cal State Apply. The currently published Fall admissions deadline is February 1; applicants should verify the Fall 2027 deadline.
