Insect Phylogenomics & Population Genomics
Palacký University Olomouc, Czech Republic

The Department of Zoology at Palacký University Olomouc invites applications for a 12-month postdoctoral position in phylogenomics, population genomics, and molecular phylogenetics of insects, with a particular focus on ants (Formicidae).

The successful candidate will work at the Department of Zoology (https://zoologie.upol.cz) in close collaboration with the Laboratory of Molecular Ecology and Biodiversity (https://www.hormigas.mx). Our research combines molecular, evolutionary, ecological, and biogeographic approaches to investigate the diversity and evolution of tropical organisms.

POSITION DETAILS

Duration: 12 months
Anticipated start: January–March 2027 (negotiable)
Location: Olomouc, Czech Republic
Salary: CZK 45,000 gross/month, adequate for local living costs

RESEARCH FOCUS

The primary focus of the position will be the analysis of insect molecular and genomic datasets from Melanesia and the South Pacific.

The candidate will work with existing datasets, including:

  • Genomic and genome-scale sequence data
  • Ultraconserved elements (UCEs)
  • RADseq data
  • Sanger sequence data, including multilocus and DNA barcode datasets
  • Population-genetic and population-genomic data, including microsatellites

The research will address questions related to phylogenetic relationships, population structure, species and lineage diversity, biogeography, and the evolutionary history of tropical insect lineages.

The candidate will be expected to contribute substantially to bioinformatic and statistical analyses, interpretation of results, and preparation of manuscripts for publication. There will also be opportunities to develop additional research questions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants should have:

  • A completed PhD in evolutionary biology, molecular ecology, phylogenetics, population genetics/genomics, bioinformatics, entomology, or a related field
  • A demonstrated publication record in phylogenomics, molecular phylogenetics, population genetics/genomics, or insect systematics
  • Strong practical experience with molecular sequence data and expertise in several approaches relevant to the position, such as genomic data, UCEs, RADseq, Sanger sequence data, and microsatellites
  • Experience with population-genetic and/or population-genomic analyses and proficiency in relevant bioinformatic and statistical methods
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an international research team
  • Good scientific writing and communication skills in English

Previous experience with insects, particularly ants or other non-model organisms, is advantageous but not essential.

WHAT WE OFFER

The position provides an opportunity to join an international research environment focused on tropical molecular ecology, evolution, and biogeography.

The candidate will work with existing molecular datasets and biological collections from New Guinea and the South Pacific, ranging from Sanger sequence datasets to modern genomic datasets.

Palacký University is one of the major research universities in the Czech Republic. Olomouc is a historic university city with a large academic community and a relatively low cost of living compared with many Western European university cities.

APPLICATION

Application deadline: November 8, 2026

Applicants should submit the following documents:

  • A CV including a complete publication list
  • A brief statement describing their research background, relevant methodological expertise, and research interests
  • Contact details for two academic references

Applications must be submitted electronically through the official Palacký University recruitment portal:
