University of California Berkeley, Department of Integrative Biology: Assistant Professor – Comparative Biomechanics

Posted on August 23, 2023
Next review date: Sunday, Oct 1, 2023 at 11:59pm (Pacific Time)
Anticipated start: July 1, 2024

Salary range: The posted UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the following table(s) for the current salary scale(s) for this position: (https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2023-24/oct-2023-acad-salary-scales/t1.pdf). The current base salary range for this position is $74,600 –$97,200. “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay, which would yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

The Department of Integrative Biology (IB) at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position in the area of comparative biomechanics, broadly defined.

We seek exceptional scientists researching integrative organismal design, biomechanics, or functional morphology in either aquatic or terrestrial taxa (which may include plants or animals, with particular interest in humans both past and present). We are particularly interested in candidates doing integrative work combining laboratory, field, and modeling approaches (or spanning multiple timescales or levels of organization) to answer fundamental questions in organismal design, functional adaptation, evolutionary morphology, or related fields.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish a thriving externally funded research program, to effectively train and mentor students, to contribute to instruction in IB’s core courses as well as in their area of expertise, and to contribute to an equitable and inclusive department and campus. They will join a department with a strong multidisciplinary approach and will be expected to complement and to create connections with already strongly represented fields such as ecology, evolutionary biology, physiology, neuroscience, and paleobiology. UCB has exceptional strengths in many areas of biology and engineering, and our new colleague will have the opportunity to partner in research, teaching and leadership in both IB and the larger Berkeley community.

Competitive candidates will demonstrate evidence of outstanding research productivity, potential to obtain external funding, a commitment to excellence in teaching and in mentoring of undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs, and a commitment to advancing equity, inclusion, non-discrimination, and belonging consistent with Berkeley’s principles of community.

IB is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia. Basic qualifications (required at time of application): PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in PhD or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start): PhD degree (or equivalent international degree) must be held by start date.Preferred qualifications: Applicants with an exceptional research record in any area of comparative biomechanics are encouraged to apply, and preferred qualifications include that applicants demonstrate excellence, originality, and productivity in research record in any area of comparative biomechanics; demonstrate evidence of commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching and research mentoring, as well as public outreach; demonstrate evidence of commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, non-discrimination, and belonging; and/or demonstrate success for potential for success in securing external funding.

Applications must include the following documents 1) CV, 2), cover letter, 3) statement of research objectives, 4) statement of teaching interests, 5) statement on contributions to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (including information about your understanding of these topics, your record of activities to date, and your specific plans and goals for advancing equity and inclusion if hired at Berkeley), 6) three separate significant publications, with a statement for each that begins with the manuscript title and author list and then summarizes, in approximately 300 words, the significance of the selected publication, 7) brief description of research accomplishments, and 8) three to five references (contact information only).
