The Ornithopterus Lab at the University of Maine (Orono) is seeking highly motivated Ph.D. students to work on cutting-edge research related to animal locomotion in complex environments starting in Fall 2023 or Spring 2024. Students will work on projects such as bird flight on snow, electrostatic effects on small organisms, snow springtails jumping performance, or birds’ filter-feeding hydrodynamics. The Ornithopterus Lab focuses on the animal physiology, fluid dynamics, and adaptations of animals moving in such complex flows as rain, waterfalls, turbulent flows, thermal convection, and perturbed water surfaces. Our research lies at the intersection between physics, engineering, and environmental biology. Students will be supported by a combination of Research and Teaching Assistant positions.
Required Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in biology, engineering, physics, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications :
- Experience working with live animals in the lab or field.
- Independent and creative.
- Experience working with a team.
- Basic knowledge of physics, math, and coding.
