Charles H. Page

At the SICB 1998 Annual Meeting in Boston, Jan. 3-7, 1998, we will begin to recognize excellence in student research with an award of $100 for the best student oral or poster presentation in the field of neurobiology. I hope that you have encouraged your students to present their research at the meeting. The latest SICB membership report lists 260 SICB members as primary (61) or secondary (199) affiliates of DNB. Hopefully, in addition to presenting papers and attending the exciting scientific sessions at the Boston meeting, many members will be able to fit the annual DNB business meeting/social into their schedules. The thrust of this meeting will be how to best develop DNB and enhance its impact at the Annual Meeting. We need your ideas for innovative programs, symposia, etc. At this meeting we will also establish bylaws for DNB (see the Spring 1997 SICB Newsletter for a copy of the proposed DNB bylaws) and a schedule for electing DNB officers. Those members who are unable to attend the Boston meeting but wish to contribute to the development of DNB should send their ideas and comments via e-mail, snail mail or phone to either Kiisa Nishikawa, Rich Satterlie or myself so that we can present them at the meeting.

It is already time to start planning for DNB sponsored symposia for the 2000 SICB meeting. Bring your ideas for symposia themes to Boston or send them to Kiisa, Rich or myself. We need several more volunteers to evaluate student presentations at the Boston meeting. Additionally, we need someone to serve as DNB representative to the SICB Public Affairs Committee, and one or more members to review neurobiology/neuroscience textbooks for the American Zoologist.

We are looking forward to meeting many of you at Boston.
