Pattern and process of physiological adaptation of animals
Members of our group are interested in both the pattern and process of physiological adaptation of animals, especially birds and mammals. Because studies on animals living in harsh environments often provide insights into the constraints and mechanisms driving physiological adjustment, we concentrate our work in regions of climatic extremes, especially the deserts of North America, Australia, Africa, and most recently the Middle East. Much of our work has revolved around attempts to understand the factors that influence daily energy and water requirements because these together are fundamental requisites for life and likely candidates for the action of natural selection.
